what’s in a name?

September 1, 2008

Juliet:
“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”

-Romeo & Juliet

What’s in a name? Juliet said it first. Lately i have been thinking about names, and that some names are so endearing and some are just merely the name in which given to you upon birth.

What’s in a name?

Some names are so compelling people write songs about them.

A whole song dedicated to this person with this intoxicating name.

For Example:

Angie - The Rolling Stones

Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond

Cecilia - Simon and Garfunkle

Delilah - Queen

Jolene - Ray Lamontagne

Josie - Blink 182

Michelle - The Beatles

Rhonda (Help Me Rhonda) - The Beach Boys

Roxanne - The Police

Susie Q - Creedance Clearwater Revival

Veronica - Elvis Costello

Leah (ah! Leah) - Donnie Iris

Anna (Anna Begins) - Counting Crows

Darlene - Led Zepplin……

How is it that these names are so…well…good. They obviously have made great songs, and they can be the type of name people fall in love with, and name their children after.

I on the other hand have the single most worst name to rhyme with… Katherine.

Matherine, patherine, natherine…..see what i mean. Not exactly  what you might call song material.

I’m no Roxanne, or Josie, or Michelle my bell. Or Caroline, or Susie Q….just Katherine.

Now granted Katherine is a classic name, its been around for centuries. Katherine The Great, Katharine Hepburn, Catherine of Aragon. But really, its kinda boring. Classic can sometimes be a nice way of saying boring. And its not that these women weren’t great, because they were. They made history didn’t they? Its just that… They were historical and not so much exciting, enticing or inspiring. Classic, Historical, and Maybe a little bit boring…is that the definition of Katherine?

Its not one of those names that grabs you out of your chair and begs you to dream about them. Its no Cecilia, or Claire, or Amelia. Its not a name you want to get tattooed on your body, its no Julia, or Lilly or Mary. Its not a name that makes you wonder about everything the person is, not close to a Delilah, or a Eleanor or a Rosalie. It’s not even one of those “new-age-kinda-weird-but-you-love-it-anyways” names like Apple, or Lieghton, or Harlow.

Its just… Katherine.

Katherine: - Kath. er. ine.  [kath-er-in, kath-rin]

–noun: -A female given name: from the greek word meaning pure. : related words: classic, historical and maybe a little bit boring (-k.mez revised)

just….. Katherine.

Katherine. Katherine. Katherine.

i dare you to rhyme with that.

dearest,

August 28, 2008

Today i put on your cologne so it would smell like you were right next to me. I know that sounds weird… mainly because i’m a girl and it’s men’s cologne….

It smells better on you anyway.

feng shui?

August 10, 2008

Recently i have been looking into this whole feng shui thing.

could it possibly be any more confusing?

after 2 hours of research the only thing i understood was that mirrors are bad for bedrooms, i needed a wish fulfilling red jewel and something called a victory horse in the south of my room. Needless to say i’m short on victory horses.

no wonder new age is always being choked up to mumbo jumo.

wish me luck.

home is arguable.

August 6, 2008

“If home is where the heart is my home is with you”

- “where it all begins” : andrew stonestreet

I feel as if i would be so much better away from here. This state of entrapment i feel as if ive inherited just by merely living with those who are my family in this rural place they call music city.

I have trouble breathing or even thinking lately. Like every part of life has been cut or ripped from me and i know not how to function in waking life. I have become a zombie living amongst the life in which i use to live. Maybe its simply that i felt more alive in this past month living some place else then i maybe have ever felt here and being here feels lacking….or something to that effect. Thats all i can say is that something here isnt right, its missing something, its lacking. You know that point in your life when you realize that the house that you grew up in isn’t really your home anymore? All of the sudden even though you have some place where you can put your stuff that idea of home is gone. Thats where i’m at. Or is it that i just dont fit here anymore?

Have i’ve out grown this place i once called home?

yes.

…but if that is the case then where do i go?

where do i belong?

If the saying “home is where the heart is” true, then will i never feel at home until i am with the one i love? Or maybe its with the ones i love? Dont get me wrong i love the people i love here. period. i do.

But this just isn’t my home anymore.

going to the chapel…

July 28, 2008

went to a wedding on saturday.

*****

What is it about weddings? I feel like weddings either make you want to get married or they completely turn you away from the idea. Weddings are full of the undecided or the deciding. Mothers wishing their children off, girls imagining every bow and flower, guys imagining the bachelor parties….. It’s a sea of thoughts.

The whole idea of the throwing of the bouquet and the guarder…they are just begging to marry people off.

Maybe thats why someone had the idea to involve dancing afterward, to loosen up the already awkward?
